abstract = {In Cuba semidwarf rice varieties grow on 98% of the area. Virtually all carry the same Dee-geo-won-gen dwarfing gene. Also, most if not all the cultivars have the same cytoplasm. The induced mutations approach was undertaken in order to generate alternative genetic sources of dwarfing with different cytoplasms and to improve the grain quality of Cuban rice. The seeds of two varieties, Basmati 370 and Gloria, were irradiated with 200 and 300 Gy of 60Co gamma rays. In several generations of selection, progeny testing and preliminary yield tests 10 mutants (6 from Basmati 370 and 4 from Gloria), whose yields exceeded the source cultivars, have been advanced to replicated yield trials. Some of the mutant lines are also resistant to lodging and to blast (Pyricularis grisea). It is concluded the induced mutations can be used successfully to improve plant type and other agronomic traits in rice. The induced mutants will be used also in hybridization programs.},

abstract = {The isozyme variability of a group of rice mutants induced through gamma and fast neutron (14 MeV) irradiation was studied. Polymorphisms were detected using esterase, peroxidase, polyphenol oxidase and alcohol dehydrogenase systems. The mean value of genetic similarity among the different cultivars, which arose from isozymes, was 0.75. The dendrogram was constructed based on genetic similarity matrices, designed with isozyme data using the unweighed pair group method arithmetic average (UPGMA) method. The efficiency of the UPGMA model for the estimation of genetic relationship among cultivars was supported by cophenetic correlation coefficients. Such values indicate that the distortion degree for the estimated similarities was minimal. It was found that both gamma rays and fast neutrons generated a wide range of variability which can be detected by means of isozyme patterns, even in closely related cultivars.},

abstract = {Induced mutation and biotechnology techniques are current approaches used in plant breeding. At present work, the induced mutation and embryo zygotic culture techniques were used in order to characterize the radiosensitivity of avocado commercial varieties, Hass and California. The induced diversity in plant material was also evaluated in morphological seedling descriptors as: height seedling, diameter seedling neck, leaves number, length of principal root and secondary root number. The obtained results showed high susceptibility of both varieties to gamma rays. California was the higher sensitivity variety. Percentage of entire shoot induction showed clear dependence of radiation dose in both varieties. Thus dose range for mutagenesis was determined. In general, variation of morphological seedling descriptors not was clearly agreed to increase of radiation dose. In addition, the results suggested that variation in morphological seedling descriptors also could be depending of genotypes. The useful of mature embryo culture of avocado for improvement of breeding approaches in this crop, was discussed.},

abstract = {μXRF analysis of decoration motifs on Majolica pottery in fragments corresponding to several Majolica types was carried out using an spectrometer comprising a low power Mo X-ray tube and a elliptic-shape concentration lens with a 60 um spot. Both surface scanning and spot measurements were carried a out, allowing the qualitative identification of the inorganic pigments used for the surface painting decoration and the quantitative analysis of the main glaze composition. The absence of interference signal arising from the excitation on the underlying paste when analysing thin-lead glazing was evaluated, allowing ensuring the suitable of the analytical procedures. A distinction was found between different types of majolica by the composition of the lead tin glaze enamel and by the presence of other elements in the blue, black and orange decoration.},

abstract = {The development of appropriate nuclear instrumentation to perform neutron activation analyze (NAA), using thermal and fast neutrons, can be useful to investigate materials outside the reactor premises. Considering this fact, a small size neutron irradiator prototype was developed at IPEN facilities (Instituto de Pesquisas Energeticas e Nucleares - Brazil). Basically, this prototype consists of a cylinder of 1200 mm long and 985 mm diameter (filled with paraffin) with two Am-Be sources (600GBq each) arranged in the longitudinal direction of its geometric center. The material to be irradiated is positioned at a radial direction of the cylinder between the two Am-Be sources. The main advantage of this irradiator is a very stable neutron flux eliminating the use of standard material (measure of the induced activity in the sample by comparative method). This way the process became agile, practical and economic, but quantities at mg levels of samples are necessary to achieve good sensitivity, when the material has a low microscopy neutron cross section. As fast and thermal neutron can be used, the flux distribution, for both, were calculated and the prototype performance is discussed.},

abstract = {The Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) technique is a very attractive method for mass spectrometry, since it allows determination of concentrations with sensitivity down to 1 atom of isotope in 1015 atoms, using few milligrams samples. A Tandem accelerator is used as a magnetic and electrostatic analyzer. The determination of these extremely low concentrations of rare isotopes, accelerated to the MeV range, is measured by the direct counting of the atoms by nuclear detection techniques. The AMS technique has been implemented recently in Brazil, at the Pelletron 8UD Tandem accelerator (Sao Paulo), following many improvements on the ion source, VGM control, machine parameters control and detection system. In this contribution we report an important application on AMS on archaeological studies, performed at the Prime Lab (USA), on the dating of ceramics, bones, charcoals, nuts and shells samples of the of the coast of Rio de Janeiro. The main objective of this work is to improve the present knowledge on the occupation of Brazil by the Indians in the prehistoric period, studying archaeological sites located in Rio de Janeiro. Studies show that the Brazilian coast was first occupied in the beginning of the Holocene, with the settlements of the collectors of mollusk, builders of shell mounds, called Sambaquis. The word is of Tupi etymology, tamba meaning shellfish and ki to pile up. The Tupi were a horticultural/potter group who used to live on the Brazilian coast at the time of the European arrivals; they coined the term that describes the main characteristic of the sites - the accumulation of great quantities of mollusk shells. One of objectives of this research is to understand those societies functioning structure, spatial ordering, interaction in the environment and their transformation processes, from the study of their remains. It is intended to analyze the region occupation process dynamics and search for possible links between the pre-pottery population socio-cultural system destabilization, from the study of the relation between fishermen-collectors group (builders of shell mounds) and horticulturist, ceramics manufacturers group. Another objective is to compare information from the this area to data available from the entire national territory in order to delimit the origin point of these groups and their expansion routes. The geographical identification of prehistoric routes depends exclusively on the relation between location/characterization of the archaeological sites and the radiocarbon dating.},

It should be known as these factors influence in each one of the different dosimetry systems and this way to minimize their effect in the value of the absorbed dose and to obtain exact values . abstract = {The purpose of this work was to verify the 25 Gy dose using the ISO standard ISO/TR 13409 for the production of bone grafts from the Tissue Bank ORTOP of the Complejo Cientifico Ortopedico Internacional Frank Pais. We performed two principal microbiological activities: bioburden estimate, pre-sterilization count plus a compensation for the efficiency of the recovery method, by ISO 11737-1 and test of sterility by ISO 11737-2. The techniques for Bioburden estimation could be direct or indirect. Choice of direct vs. indirect depends on number of contaminating micro-organisms, product configuration, ability to remove microbial contamination, effect of removal method on microbial viability, types and location of micro-organisms, nature of product and culture conditions. For a test of sterility, he product unit or SIP putted direct immersion in educated culture medium and incubate. Keep precaution to minimize level to the false positives is necessary.},

abstract = {In this paper the moisture in sand and also the sulfur content in toluene have been described by using the simultaneous fast neutron/gamma transmission technique (FNGT). Monte Carlo calculations show that it is possible to apply this technique with accelerator-based and isotopic neutron sources in the on-line analysis to perform the product quality control, specifically in the building materials industry and the petroleum one. It has been used particles from a 14MeV neutron generator and also from an Am-Be neutron source. The estimation of optimal system parameters like the efficiency, detection time, hazards and costs were performed in order to compare both neutron sources.},

abstract = {The archaeological researches in Cuba have been oriented mainly to the study of both the eastern and westerns territories of the island: the former province Oriente, considered as the location with the higher density of Agroalfarero communities; and the former provinces of Pinar del Rio, La Havana and Matanzas where mostly Archaic sites have been discovered. However, and in despite of the rich diversity and relevance of the central region of Cuba, this region has been only partially and incompletely studied. The variety in the developed of diverse social and economic structures located in the heart of the Cuban archipelago the central region was the centre of the confluence of communities arriving from the eastern territories herding strong agricultural and pottery traditions interacted with the Archaic already established centuries ago in these territories and successive transculturation and assimilation processes should take place. The classification of the aborigine pottery manufacture of the centro region in three major stylistic variations (Jagua, Yayabo and Yaguajay) is described in details on the lathes interpretations of Celaya and Godo, 1998 an the origin and format transformation of the themes represented in the pottery The suitable of combining Neutron Activation Analysis and electron Probe Microanalysis for the purposes of establishing compositional classification of archaeological pottery is in several compositional groups served as new evidence to the discussion of ceramic production and regional interaction between the Subtaino and Archaic settlements},

abstract = {The isotopic renography is a technique that permits the evaluation of renal and the urinary tract diseases. In our country is not possible performs these studies only using gamma cameras due to the high costs of this technique, so the renography results an important method for this. It was developed a computerizing renography system in order to improve the renography system existing at the National Nephrology Institute (INEF), which is the head institute in this field in Cuba. The computerizing renography system includes a detection system, an interface card and software. As detection system was using the existing at the Institute. Specialists of the CEADEN using the high experience of the INEF and the international standards developed the card and software. The new software has several advantages with respect to the ancient, as example: normalized and standardizing control and processing protocols, a higher number of studies, the conduction and parameters validation of the studies, help system included, a database with the study results, teaching possibilities, etc. The validation of the news card and software was carried out simultaneously with the old system during 1 year approximately. This permitted to compare the main parameters and results in both systems. The results obtained were analyzed using statistical programs. As conclusion we obtained that both systems have a high correlation, so it is possible to substitute the old system with a more powerful and integral renography system.},

abstract = {In this report gamma radiation techniques were performed a double function of proceeding the processes of polymerization and crosslinking with the advantage of avoid the uses of chemicals crosslinks. The influence of absorbed dose on the swelling ratio as a function of pH have been presented. For these hydrogels, swelling studies indicated that swelling decrease with the increase of the absorbed dose from 10 to 50 kGy. It was confirmed that at the firsts stages (100-150 min) the diffusion studies were in accordance with Fickian behavior and the diffusion coefficients were obtained, whereas the latest stages were in good agreement with second-order diffusion kinetics proposed by Schott 1 .These news hydrogels exhibit a higher degree of swelling, a factor that, a priori, assures high biocompatibility because it increases the similarity with living tissues.},

The experiment was carry out using a radio-isotopic neutron source of Pu-Be, with a intensity of 2.1 x 107 n.s-1, producing a neutron flux density of 1.7 x 105 n.cm-2.s-1. There is agreement between obtained results and the averages reported in the literature. Spatial distribution of the neutron flux density was calculated in two way. abstract = {Several studies about the influence of heavy metals onto the growth of vegetables have been carried out in Cuba by the Ministry of Agriculture with the aim to evaluate the effects resulting of the continuous application of fertilizers and other materials to the crop soils. The analysis of metal contents in soil and vegetable samples is often troublesome due to the low concentration levels to be determined. During the present work different EDXRF, AAS and ASV methods were applied and compared for the evaluation of Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb contents in ferralitic -red soil and sorgo plant samples. Several Certified Reference Materials (CRM) (inorganic and organic matrixes) were analyzed in order to evaluate the performance of the analytical procedures and the bias and precision of the results. A study was performed growing sorgo plants in several series of pots where different quantities of metals were added to the soil substrate. The observed correlation between the metal contents in soil and plants resulting after such experiment, as well as the influence of different additions of each metal onto the plant growth is also presented.},

abstract = {Ton, Toff and Tc behaviors as a function of depth for a superconductor material irradiated with Cs137 gamma source have been studied experimentally and by computer simulation techniques. After the irradiation the critical temperature of the material increased, observing that the most significant changes took place at zones of sample nearest to the gamma source. By simulation was found that the higher dose concentrations locate near the incident surface of the sample. Comparing this simulation with our experimental data we found a good coincidence. Our study indicates that the dose deposited about the incident surface is high enough in order to stimulate the processes that benefit the structure and therefore it improves the superconducting properties of the material. Moving into the sample bulk these processes become less effective due to the insufficient dose deposition.},

abstract = {Absolute dose rate distributions in water around ^{103}Pd, ^{125}I, ^{169}Yb and ^{192}Ir brachytherapy sources were estimated by mean of the EGS4 Monte Carlo Simulation System. DLC-136/PHOTX cross section library, water molecular form factors, bound Compton scattering and Doppler broadening of the Comptonscattered photon energy were considered in the calculations. Following AAPM recommendations for dosimetry of interstitial brachytherapy sources, dose rate constants, radial dose functions and anisotropy functions have been calculated. Comparison of absolute dose rate values computed after the protocol recommended by the AAPM Task Group No. 43 between their proposed values and our Monte Carlo calculated values shows excellent agreement between both data sets. Moreover, Monte Carlo-based dosimetry data can be used as alternative to measured values offering reliable and accurate values, thus validating them as an emerging clinical dosimetry tool.},

abstract = {Since 1990, the Archaeology in Cuba has relied on a very limited analytic capacity, mainly for lacking in resources and of technical basis. The works performed to study ceramic artifacts related with different archaeological contexts have been carried out basically by their morphology, style features, techniques of elaboration, texture or other properties. The aim of the Research Project CUB9397/RB consisted on the application of the Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis (INAA), as the more frequently used analytic technique for the study of chemical composition in ceramic objects during the last years, in some of the Archaeological researches that are presently in course in Cuba. Some of the commonly found colonial pottery types were analyzed by INAA in order to establish compositional models. Two major types of ceramic ware conformed the main research interests during the first stage of the research on Colonial pottery: the first, samples classified as belonging to several Majolica styles of Spanish and Mexican provenance; and the second type included samples of ordinary pottery that indicated an the presence in Havana of a starting local manufacture trying to follow Spanish traditions.},

abstract = {Bacillus thuringiensis toxin is one of the world widely used entomopathogen. It presents an strong insecticide activity on Lepidoptera, Coleoptera and Diptera. It was studied the effect of Laser He-Ne on Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki strain LBT-24. Growing curves were made and were calculated the duplication time and the specific growing speed of each one. The curves were statistically compared. It was also analysed the phage induction with and without Laser red light influence. Also, it was observed the presence of the d-endotoxin crystal with this treatment. The red Laser He-Ne enhanced the growth of this micro-organism under laboratory conditions and didn't have any effect over the other characteristics analysed.},

abstract = {In the present paper the manufacturing and characterization of a Cr-Ni thermopile sensor for CW-laser power measurements is described. The sensor was obtained using the vacuum evaporation method. We have chosen a thin film approach because it gives more flexibility in the design of the elements and in the choice of materials. The substrate of the sensitive element is a 1mm thick ceramic disk having a diameter of 40 mm. The thermopile metals were chosen for two reasons: (1) They have good thermocouple properties and (2) the evaporated films are tough and adherent. The geometry of the 11-junction thermopiles sufficiently coarse to allow fabrication of the thermopiles by successive evaporations through registering masks. The sensor is capable of power measurements of 1 to 30 watt and this version has a sensibility of 350 mV/W.},

In the present paper were obtained the calibration curves of the amber perspex 3042 dosimeters, batch l, in our condition of work, as the irradiation and storage temperatures, as well as, different measurement wavelengths, these factors influence in the absorbed dose value determination, and it to know the relation between the post-irradiation time and the induced specific absorbance value in function of the absorbed dose.},

abstract = {In this work, isozyme and agromorphologic variability of radiation-induced rice mutants with different cytoplasm base was surveyed. Agromorphologic data (plant type, lodging resistance, life cycle and yielding) were transformed into binary data. This markers, along with isozyme (Peroxidases, Esterases, Catalases, Alcohol Dehydrogenases and Polyphenoloxidase) data, were considered for genetic diversity analyses in order to estimate the extent of diversity generated by ionizing radiation. Genetic Similarity between individuals was obtained based on Dice's Coefficient. The UPGMA phenogram defined three main clusters that clearly corresponded to the different cytoplasm sources. However, further discrimination between control varieties and their mutants could be obtained. Bootstrapping analysis was performed to estimate the robustness of the group in the phenogram. According to their bootstrap P value (99.6%), Basmati-370 mutant lines could be considered statistically different from their control. This analysis is suggested as an useful supporting tool for an accurate varietal validation. A Multiple Correspondence Analysis (MCA) showed individuals dispersion around the three principal axis of variation. In general the UPGMA phenogram pattern was corroborated at MCA. Variables such as life cycle, presence of bands Est-a and Prx-m and the absence of Est-i, Prx-h and Prx-i accounted for the higher contribution to variation. The adequacy of morphological and isozyme descriptors for new mutant lines validation is also discussed.},

abstract = {X -ray diffraction technique was employed to experimentally determinate the changes in the cell parameters of YBa2Cu3O7-d samples exposed to de action of Co60 gamma irradiation (1.33 and 1.17 MeV) at room temperature. The a, b, and c parameters and both the cell volume and orthorhombicity were graphically presented as a function of de exposure doses. A singular behavior of these parameters with the dose increment was observed. The results are compared with the values reported for the optimal YBa2Cu3O7 structure and with some experimental galvanomagnetic measurements. Some ideas about the mechanisms, which take place in the observed behaviors, are discussed.},
